Sport & Performance Consulting
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a process where psychological problems are treated through communication between an individual and a therapist.
My Philosophy for Sport & Performance Consulting
The most important overarching theme for Sport & Performance Psychology is to help athletes express themselves athletically. There are two distinct and equally important parts to achieving this goal: Mental Skills Training and Understanding Root Cause.
Mental Skills Training makes up what I consider the quick-fix aspects of this work. This side of treatment focuses on sympton reduction. Skills such as relaxation techniques, breathing modalities, meditation, goal setting, visualization, and attentional focus all help athletes in the here and now to improve their game and to use their physical skills to the greatest effect.
Understanding Root Cause: An athlete may have trouble dealing with the pressure at difficult moments in a match and as a Sport Performance Consultant I can help him cope with the symptoms. However, without understanding the root of the issue other symptoms will come out at some point and these underlying issues can have a tremendously negative impact if not examined and understood by the individual. This aspect takes longer than the Mental Skills Training but has a longer lasting impact on the athlete in their sport and everyday life.
The combination of these two approaches can help an athlete overcome some of the challenges in the short-term, while also improving the quality of life in the long-term.
During our work together, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and coaching may be integrated when appropriate, as they can be complementary modalities. This produces a powerful synergy that can help you heal past problems and current crises as you move toward your visions and goals.
This work is a collaboration where both of us work towards the goal of helping you to help yourself.
As we work together you will:
- Develop your ability to observe your thoughts, feelings and sensations without judgment.
- Better understand whatever issues and situations you're struggling with in the present moment.
- Work towards developing your "inner vision."
These are the critical steps that lead to healing and growth.
